Day Skipper – Shorebased and Practical Courses
There are 2 Day Skipper courses and it is strongly recommended that you achieve the Shorebased Course Completion certificate before going to sea on a yacht in the Practical Course to practice the skills learned ashore.
RYA Day Skipper - Shorebased
This is a comprehensive introduction to chart work, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship. The course is invaluable if you want to learn how to start making decisions on board. There are 17 syllabus subjects as follows:-

- International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (IRPCS)

- Navigational charts and publications

- Navigation in restricted visibility

RYA Day Skipper – Practical
At Miramar Sailing School we are able to offer the Non Tidal endorsement to Day Skipper certificates. The course builds on the fundamentals learned in the shorebased course, but also introduces you to the practicalities of skippering a yacht by day in familiar waters.
It continues on from the subjects in the shorebased course with the following syllabus subjects:-
- Preparation for sea
- Deck work
- Navigation
- Pilotage
- Meteorology
- Rule of the road
- Maintenance and repair work
- Engines
- Victualing
- Emergency situations
- Yacht handling under power
- Yacht handling under sail
- Passage making

- Night cruising.
After achieving Day Skipper level you will be able to skipper a small cruising yacht, of 7 to 15 metres in length, by day in familiar waters.
